Big healthy annuals and veg

Baraka Gardens will be open next week to pick up your seeds and supplies. This centre specializes in big healthy annuals and veggie plants – and they do a lot of custom orders too. Bring your containers in and they’ll plant them full of goodies for you – or come for advice on starting your own veggie garden just like Grandma used to have. Baraka Gardens is just 15 minutes west of Stony Plain and one km off Hwy 16.

Prairie-hardy trees and shrubs

Cannor Nurseries, between Spruce Grove and Devon, has the region’s largest selection of prairie hardy shrubs and caliper trees (trees that measure at least 5 cm around the trunk). They grow evergreens and ornamental flowering trees – think pink blossoming crabapples, flowering chokecherry and lilacs – and instant shade and privacy trees like leafy elm, laurel leaf willows and mountain ash. Plus lots of fruiting trees and shrubs like blueberries, Saskatoons, apple and cherry trees. They are open weekdays until April 20, when they open on weekends too.

Happy Spring flowers

Dunvegan Gardens is open all year Mon to Sat from 10–6 pm. You’ll find lots of colourful spring flowers, succulents and herbs for your window-sill in now. They also have racks of seeds and starter kits to get you sprouting. Plus browse their gift shop for fashions, home décor and garden ornaments. You can find the greenhouse just west of the city on 215 St. and 23 Ave. in Parkland County.

Bright Calliope geraniums

Golden Greenhouses specializes in growing huge Calliope geraniums, which are specially selected to reach wide instead of tall and fill out your planters. They grow these best sellers in all four colours – dark red, burgundy, hot pink and lavender rose. The greenhouse opens for the season the last week in April. Find them on RR 264 south of Spruce Grove.

Everlasting perennials

Kiwi Nurseries grows and sells prairie-hardy trees, shrubs and perennials – and does landscape design too. Come to the farm and greenhouse on Township Road 532, east of Spruce Grove, starting May 1 to pick out a tree – and they’ll arrange delivery and planting for you too. Or bring home healthy happy perennial ground-covers, vines and grasses to will bring you joy every year. Appointments available Mon to Fri – closed on weekends.

The biggie

The Big Greenhouse is right on Hwy 16A as you come into Spruce Grove from Edmonton. It really is a biggie – they have everything and they grow most of it right on this 11-acre site. You’ll find a huge assortment of annuals, perennials, herbs, trees, shrubs – plus all the gear, including pots, fertilizers and garden décor. The greenhouse opens later in the spring – keep an eye on their website for opening hours or order online.
