The Tri-Region Guide to the U of A Botanic Garden

Tri Region Tourism Day Trip Ideas

Picture this: your little guy stands very, very still with a proud smile and a big blue butterfly perched on his finger. Good thing you remembered your camera because this priceless moment is just one of many you’ll enjoy at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden.

For family together time (with lots of space to run), a special occasion or a leisurely walk in a beautiful garden – just hop in the car for a quick 40 min drive in the Tri-Region.

Abundant gorgeous spaces

The peaceful Kurimoto Japanese Garden covers five acres and features lots of water, bridges, stone lanterns, a pagoda, belfry and gorgeous greenery. Designed as a strolling garden, it’s a meditative, open and airy space and one to take your time through. The Aga Khan Garden, inspired by Islamic architecture, and boasts an impressive stonework structure and a massive central courtyard, is the Botanic Garden’s newest pride and joy.

You’ll also discover gardens dedicated to herbs, peonies, native species and alpine plants. One of our favourite spots to explore, especially in spring, is the Primula Dell. It’s a wooded hollow off the main path with lots of curvy colourful flower beds and a really great place for an extended game of “chase me!”

Then there are the big warm greenhouses with a huge variety of tropical, arid and temperate plant collections and all the butterflies. As you can see, you’ll need to come back a lot to really experience everything.

Special days to visit

Open from June till September, with limited hours until October, the garden hosts lots of special events throughout the summer including fancy high teas, cool kid dress-up days, family pyjama parties and culinary celebrations. Check every week to find something happening in the garden!

The Japanese Garden hosts monthly tea ceremonies, a children’s festival and the breathtaking Luminaria candle display in December. And of course, there are lots of special days celebrating things that grow: lilies, roses, wild mushrooms and fall fruits.
